Congratulations to Josh Bunker who is GBA’s newest CFI!! Josh passed his test today in N37JA. A Chinook instructor, and instrument flight examiner with the Nevada National Guard, Josh started with us in February and worked his way though his fixed-wing add-ons: Private Pilot, Instrument, Commercial, and now CFI. Josh’s schedule will soon be loaded in Flight Schedule Pro. Josh brings experience in the transition from rotorcraft to fixed wing. Congratulations as well to his instructors, Mark Montague, Stephen Weaver, and Kyle Hauss. We are so excited for him and where his success and determination is taking him!! “Today was a good day.”
Congratulations to Robert Dodge who is the newest licensed pilot in Northern Nevada!! Robert forward slipped into 16L to complete his checkride in N2291C. His checkride was definitely exciting. Ran into a tire issue at Stead and had to delay for a bit, but once it was changed, he came back and crushed it. Congratulations to his instructors as well. Robert flew with Emmett Castellan and Kyle Hauss. Robert’s goal is to fly medical transport. He is on his way! One step down but goals are set and he will continue to work until they are met. Great job Robert!! We look forward to continuing to fly with you!

She is on fire!! Congrats as well to her instructor Stephen Weaver. This is Averiekate’s reward for all the hard work she put in. Enjoy every bit of it and get to planning how you’re going to exercise your new privileges. The sky is yours!!

It was 12 seconds that would change the world forever. On the cold, windy morning of December 17, 1903, on the sandy dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, a small handful of men gathered around a homemade mechanical contraption of wood and fabric. They were there to witness the culmination of years of study, trial and error, sweat and sacrifice made by two humble, modest men from Dayton, Ohio. That day, the Wright Brothers’ dreams of flight would come to fruition, as Orville Wright took to the sky for 12 bumpy seconds. Today we honor the accomplishments of Wilbur and Orville Wright at the 116th anniversary celebration of the first heavier-than-air, controlled, powered flight. "More than anything else the sensation is one of perfect peace mingled with an excitement that strains every nerve to the utmost, if you can conceive of such a combination.” - Wilbur Wright
Another solo congratulations is in order...Thomas De St. Jeor was cut loose in the pattern at Carson City (KCXP) in N10446 as his instructor Matt Bowers watched from the ground. Thomas is a student at Galena High and started his flight training in California. His family moved here a few months ago and he was able to pick up where he left off and keep working towards his aviation goals. Great job Thomas and Matt!!
Congratulations to Greg Shannon for soloing today!! Greg has been doing a great job in his flight training and today experienced his first few laps solo in a busy pattern at KRTS, runway 08 in N495SP. His proud instructor, Nick Mahan, watched from the taxiway as Greg nailed his takeoffs and landings. Congratulations to both of them! We are thrilled to have you flying with us and look forward to celebrating your next big achievement.
Congratulations to another new Instrument Rated Pilot, Matt Wong!! Matt passed his checkride this afternoon in N2291C! Definitely not an easy rating to obtain but Matt worked continuously on earning this invaluable asset and useful addition to his flying privileges. Matt is usually on the road all the time for work, but he was able to successfully complete this rating during his time off. Tons of work, lots of flying, and even some fun in there. The weather has grounded Matt the last couple weeks, but not anymore! VFR minimums can’t stop him now. However, IFR does not always mean bad-weather flying, it means safe flying. We are so excited to be part of his incredible achievement and support Matt as he continues to advance! Congratulations as well to his instructor, Al Hayes!
