What a day it was! Jacob Summers soared to new heights today as he earned his Private Pilot’s License in N752DW in the skies over gorgeous Northern Nevada. Jacob has been training at Great Basin Aviation with instructor Austin Tanner to reach this lofty milestone in his life. He has always approached flying with determination and commitment and greased those landings with his perpetual and infectious smile. Jacob’s excellent skills have soared even on those early 6:00 AM flights or with building cumulus clouds in the neighborhood, which he encountered both today. Nothing can stop him! Congratulations Jacob, we are so happy for you!!

Congratulations to Mustafa Shah who soloed today at KCXP, runway 27, in N670CS. Mustafa is super inquisitive about aviation and, with this milestone completed, is on his way to being a professional pilot. Mustafa demonstrates his high technical skill consistently and warms the sky with his smile. We are excited to see where his flight plan takes him through his training! Awesome work Mustafa! Congratulations as well to his instructor Brenden Georg. Let the cross country planning begin!
Charles Lewis is Northern Nevada’s newest private pilot!! Yes, ladies and gentleman, this guy passed his checkride this afternoon in N495SP after he demonstrated pilot proficiencies with ease. Charles has been such a joy to work with. He came to us early spring from the bay area to get some flight time while he was up at the lake with his daughter for her ski team. Then we started seeing more and more of him, which we love because he brings in beer and incredible pastries, and eventually he committed to finishing his training in the Reno area. Charles has a very demanding job and has been flying early mornings and is often seen running out of the office after a flight to hop on a conference call. But, between work, moving full time to the mountains from the bay, kids and their schedules, adorable puppy, and working on his license, he did it!! We could not be more happy for him! Danny Britson, one of his instructors told Charles yesterday that if you google well prepared, Charles’ picture pops up. He was right! Charles, you did it!! Take a few days to exhale then we expect to see you back :) Huge Congratulations as well to his instructors Levi Mellows and Danny Britson
Look up perseverance in the dictionary and you will see a picture of this amazing lady, Stacy Compton!! This morning Stacy soloed on runway 32 at KRTS in N37JA as her super proud instructor Mark Montague watched on. Stacy talked herself through the pattern and landings and take-offs as she flew her first .4 PIC time. It is amazing to get some numbers in that column! Stacy is immersed in aviation. She works across the way for the airlines, trains at GBA, and also flies with some other GBA pilots. She has been working so incredible hard for this moment. We are so excited for you Stacy and can’t wait to celebrate with you when you earn your PPL! Congratulations again to Stacy and Mark! “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” - Nelson Mandela
Greg’s best Monday yet!! This morning Greg Tobin soloed in N328ME at KRNO, 16L. This local, successful, busy, business owner has been a serious, focused flyer, taking lessons when his schedule allows. Greg showed he had the skills to be pilot in command today as he stayed in the Reno pattern to fly his first few laps. Definitely wasn’t an easy one for him as a couple heavies came while he was navigating his way. This allowed him to practice some right 360s off to the east side of the airport. Great lesson in being prepared for anything. Congratulations to Greg and his instructor Austin Tanner!! Now on to some fun cross country flying!
Congratulations to Chris Mitchell who soloed today in N670CS at KRNO, runway 16L! Chris is a busy guy and schedules his flight time around his already packed schedule. This often forces him to brave the afternoon winds and heat. Today, all that practice in rough conditions paid off when Chris and his instructor Eric Tallberg got up bright and early to finally catch some calm air. It was a perfect calm morning and Chris got to take the plane for his first solo laps in controlled airspace! Chris handled the aircraft with confidence and is well on his way to meeting his aviation goals. Great Job Chris and Eric!
Congratulations to Ben McMullen who soloed today in N37JA at KRNO, runway 16L. You would know Ben if you saw him around the ramp. He is always carrying his ridiculous sloth-holding-an-umbrella-and-riding-a-shark-with-glasses backpack, believe me, we had our concerns with Ben :) Ben started his flight training about a month ago and is another super motivated student that is truly super focused on his ground school and flight training. Ben had a great pre-solo stage check a few days ago and today his instructor, Austin Tanner, cut him loose in the KRNO pattern. He had some fun extended legs due to traffic in the pattern, but he handled it like a pro and his radio communications were on point. Now comes all the solo fun! Awesome job to Ben and Austin!!
It can be hard to get motivated on a Monday, especially after a weekend of fun celebrating freedom. But, motivation was something Will Smith was not lacking today. This morning, Will soloed at KSPZ, runway 24 in N495SP. He showed his instructor, Levi Mellows, that he had the proficiencies needed for solo flight. Levi had him pull the plane over, hopped out, and cut him loose! No more tugging on the shirttail needed. Will got to log his first PIC time as he and Levi debriefed and planned his next steps. Will is never lacking motivation when it comes to flight training. He is home from college for the summer and set a goal to earn his PPL by the time he heads back to school. He has charged his way through ground training and now to that final leg of his flight training. Awesome job Will and Levi!
Dallin Meidell soloed!!! Congratulations to this awesome guy who is definitely on the fast track to his PPL. Dallin started flying with GBA and his instructor, Levi Mellows, once he graduated from Damonte Ranch High School in June. His goal is to earn his Private Pilot by the time he leaves for college in August, and he is definitely right on target! Today, Dallin soloed N495SP at KSPZ, runway 24, as Levi watched from the sidelines. I am sure it was tempting to just keep flying, but Dallin did stop on that final lap to let Levi back in the plane. Nothing beats logging that first .4 as PIC. Congratulation to Dallin and Levi!!
