Breaking news from GBA today…local reporter becomes the news herself. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, you heard it here first. Local (Emmy deserving) news reporter, Chris Buckley, made news today when she completed all certification standards as she nailed her short field landing into Truckee airport this morning which set into motion the paperwork needed for a passed checkride. On the scene was her Dad (a fellow aviator), who flew up from Southern CA and Ubered his way to Truckee to surprise her for this once in a lifetime occasion. He commented as to how proud he is of her. Once the paperwork was complete, Chris and her first passenger, her Dad, hopped into N752DW, fired up the engine, following all hot start procedures, and made the scenic flight back to KRNO. Meeting Chris on the ramp was her instructor, Emmett Castellan, who congratulated her for this accomplishment. Chris and her Dad then proceeded to hit the town and commence celebrating. Look to the sky folks; Chris Buckley is unleashed and unstoppable!!
Congratulations Chris!! We are so excited for this adventure you are on! “She turned her can’ts into cans and her dreams into plans.” Instrument Rating, watch out!!

Here is a live WINGS Safety Seminar on July 1 that we encourage you all to attend. Controllers from NORCAL will be here to give the ins and outs for your flying within the NORCAL airspace and how you can get the most out of them. ATC is a valuable resource we have in our flying and this is another great opportunity to get some first-hand information from the folks that make it happen. In addition, you get WINGS General Knowledge credit for attending (Create a WINGS account here www.faasafety.gov/Default.aspx). Space is limited so register soon! We hope to see you there! https://www.faasafety.gov/SPANS/event_details.aspx?eid=93108
Summer is almost here as we head into the 90's for the next couple of days. These afternoons get hot out on the ramp and in flight. Chat with your instructor, look for those early flights, drink tons of water, and dress for the heat (preferably not in the outfit below). The aircraft feel it too! Get through your preflight, taxi, and run-up without delay! Make sure you have enough climb speed with the heat and higher density altitude and get up where the air is cooler to enjoy your flight!
Congratulations to Robert McDougal on his solo flight today!! It was a partly cloudy, variable wind day with beautiful landings to be had in N752DW at KRTS, Runway 08. Thank you to CFI Emmett Castellan for all his hard work in preparing Robert for this amazing flight! "Aviation is proof that given the will, we have the capacity to achieve the impossible." Incredible job Robert!!
It is a Discovery Flight morning!! Emmett is taking to the sky in N670CS with the awesome plane spotter Andy and Brenden is heading out in N10446 with aviation enthusiast and A&P student Ricardo. Such a great morning to fly!
Bittersweet day for Great Basin Aviation...Dane Meyerhoff's last day before he heads off to Compass Airlines. Dane has been with Great Basin Aviation from the beginning of his CFI/II journey. It has been such a joy watching Dane progress, share his love of aviation with so many students, progress into the learjet, get his college degree and now reach his goal of the airline. You are amazing Dane!! Way to set a goal and stick to it!
Congratulations to Jake Velez who soloed this evening at KCXP on runway 27 in N2291C! Jake is an amazing guy! He flies early mornings and evenings to make it work with his full time work schedule. Another extremely driven student pilot! "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” And, congratulations to Emmett Castellan for two soloed students today!
Congratulations to Christian Mohino for soloing today at KCXP on runway 27! While pursuing his Doctorate and working, he also somehow finds time to pursue his aviation goals. Weather has been such an issue through his training but today it was all worth it! This morning he got to kick Emmett out and take his first few laps in the pattern by himself. Now the fun cross country flights begin! Great job Christian!!
It was a beautiful morning to fly! Here is Nathan and Dane getting ready to head out on a Discovery Flight. Nathan loves aviation, has completed ground school, works at the airport, runs rno_plane_spotter on Instagram, and is graduating high school this week. Busy guy! Soon he will be jumping into pilot training full time. We are so excited to watch him as he progresses to his goals.
